Noise at work can cause hearing damage that is both permanent and disabling. This damage can be gradual, from exposure to noise over time, or it can be sudden due to extremely loud noises. Noise can also interfere with communications and make warnings harder to hear, reducing a worker’s awareness of his or her surroundings and making accidents more likely. If high noise levels cannot be avoided then appropriate mitigating factors need to be put in place.
